New Delhi, Sept 10: The Supreme Court on Thursday sought responses from the Centre and the States on a PIL seeking a uniform nationwide mechanism for investigating cases of kidnapping and abduction involving children.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana issued notices to the Centre, States and Union Territories, besides the Ministries of Education, Law and Justice, Home Affairs and the Law Commission.
The PIL, filed by advocate and petitioner Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay through advocate-on-record Ashwani Kumar Dubey, seeks time-bound investigations, specialised procedures for probing child kidnapping cases and dedicated courts for speedy trials.
The petition highlighted what it termed systemic shortcomings in dealing with cases involving missing, kidnapped and abducted children and sought judicial intervention to ensure prompt and coordinated action by investigating agencies.
It also called for a uniform framework across the country to strengthen the investigation and prosecution of such cases and ensure faster justice for affected children and their families.
