New Delhi, Sept 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday highlighted the disparity in per-capita carbon emissions between developed and developing countries, saying developed nations emit around six times more carbon per person than India.
Addressing the two-day international conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” in New Delhi, Modi said developing countries are often held responsible for global carbon emissions despite having significantly lower per-capita emissions.
He said India's per-capita carbon emissions remain less than half the global average, and argued that climate discussions should take into account differences in emissions levels and development needs.
The conference, organised by the National Green Tribunal, brings together judges, environmental experts, government officials and judicial representatives from 17 countries to discuss climate challenges and environmental governance.
Modi also highlighted India's efforts in renewable energy, rooftop solar, electric mobility, nuclear power and waste management as part of its broader approach to addressing environmental challenges.
The Prime Minister further said that India has consistently raised the issue of equity in international climate discussions and called for a broader approach to climate protection that considers differences in per-capita emissions.
He also referred to India's progress in meeting its climate commitments and expanding clean-energy initiatives, including solar power and sustainable mobility.
