Meta Agrees to Report Child Sexual Abuse Cases to Law Enforcement: Govt Sources

NEW DELHI, Sept 15: Meta has agreed to report cases involving child sexual abuse to appropriate law enforcement agencies, government sources said on Tuesday, as the Centre stepped up efforts to strengthen online safety for children.

According to the sources, Meta's decision is a first step towards making social media platforms safer for children, though much more needs to be done.

The government has maintained that the online safety of children is a "fundamental principle" and "non-negotiable" for every social media platform operating in India.

Sources said the government would take action against platforms that fail to take proactive measures to protect children from harmful content and activities online.

The Centre is also engaging with other social media and online platforms to ensure they proactively detect and remove harmful and illegal content, including child sexual abuse material and deepfakes.

The government has intensified scrutiny of social media platforms over their handling of harmful online content and is pressing them to strengthen mechanisms for protecting minors and preventing the circulation of abusive material.
